Crimes Nearby: Bank Robbery, Assaults and a Deadly Fall

The following information was supplied by the Nassau County, Rockville Centre and Lynbrook police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate convictions.

Lynbrook police confirmed the death of a Sayville man who fell from the  last Friday.

Police did not provide any additional details, but are reportedly investigating whether the man intentionally jumped or accidentally fell from the building, located at 303 Merrick Road in Lynbrook.

"We took care of distraught onlookers," said Lynbrook First Assistant Chief Anthony DeCarlo. "A couple of women were really distraught, we took them in the ambulance and took their blood pressure."

A man and a woman were forced into a room at gunpoint at the Capri Lynbrook Motor Inn shortly after midnight on Thursday morning, police said.

According to Fifth Squad detectives, a 24-year-old man and 21-year-old woman were robbed of a laptop and two cell phones by a black male, approximately 18 years old and 130 pounds. He was reportedly wearing a white T-shirt and jeans. After the alleged robbery, the victims followed the subject on foot to Freer Street where police say they lost him.

Two masked, black male subjects armed with handguns entered the Roslyn Savings Bank in Hewlett on Tuesday and ordered nine bank employees to get down on the floor of the bank, according to police.

One of the subjects jumped over the teller counter and removed an unknown amount of US currency, police said. One of the men sprayed mace into the face of a 57-year-old male employee, police said. The victim was treated at the scene and refused further medical assistance.

The subjects then fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction. There were no customers in the bank at the time.

A 15-year-old was robbed in Valley Stream late Tuesday night after a suspect displayed a handgun and demanded the victim’s valuables, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

The victim was walking down Putnam Avenue in Valley Stream at 10:32 p.m. when an “unknown male black” demanded the victim’s valuable items, police said. Showing a silver handgun, the suspect was able to obtain an unknown amount of money and a cell phone from the victim. The suspect fled the scene in his vehicle, heading southbound on Putnam Avenue, police said.

No injuries were reported from this incident.

Arrests

  • Sonny C. Williams, 56, of Rockville Centre, was arrested on June 21 and charged with third-degree assault following an investigation at his residence.
  • Jason M. Mercado, 36, of Valley Stream, was arrested on June 25 and charged with third-degree assault after causing injury to a victim during a disturbance on Sunrise Hwy.
  • RCPD Anti-Crime personnel arrested the following two defendants on June 25 during a narcotics investigation at 2 Sunrise Highway in RVC:
    • Richard I. Hemmings, 23, of Valley Stream, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.
    • Nektaria C. Drakopoulos, 23, of East Rockaway, was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
  • Shaun C. Lamacchia, 29, of Islip Terrace, was arrested on June 25 and charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, unlicensed operation, failure to yield, operating an unregistered vehicle and operation with an expired inspection certificate on Clinton Avenue in RVC.
  • Desmind Yarborough, 18, of Rockville Centre, was arrested on June 26 and charged with third-degree assault during a disturbance in his residence. The defendant was also charged with trespass after he was found to have an open warrant from Hempstead.
  • Randolph Thomas, 35, of Springfield Gardens, was arrested on June 29 and charged with shoplifting assorted razors at  in North Woodmere.
  • Yusef Manley, 35, of Far Rockaway, was arrested on July 2 and charged with the theft of assorted shaving products from the located on Peninsula Boulevard in Hewlett.
