FARMINGDALE, NY — State police are launching a criminal investigation into the trooper who was shot last week on the Southern State Parkway.

"We have reason to believe that the incident didn't happen the way it was reported," State Police Major Stephen Udice said. "We still have many questions that require additional information."

He said they are conducting dual investigations — criminal and internal— into the circumstances from a week ago. Udice said Mascia was found in violation of State Police rules and regulations, which is why, Udice said, the trooper was suspended without pay.

"All members of the New York State Police are held to a high standard," Udice said.

Mascia's weapon, shield and identification have been taken from him, state police said.

Mascia's home was searched due to "inconsistencies" in the investigation, the Nassau District Attorney previously said. Udice could not give any details about what they search uncovered.

Police initially said Mascia was shot in the leg on Oct. 30 on the highway after stopping to aid someone in a vehicle. Hundreds of troopers applauded his hospital release on Friday.

"At that time, with the information that we had available to us, there was great concern for him," Udice said. "We have reason to believe that the incident didn't happen the way it was reported."

State police said, "No arrest has been made or is imminent."
