Fire spread to the side of the home.

This story was updated on May 7 at 11:26 a.m.

Firefighters helped extinguish a Washington Street garage fire in West Hempstead Monday afternoon.

The fire started around 3:30 p.m. in the connected garage of 616 Washington St. and carried to the side of the home, according to Lakeview Assistant Chief Fred Senti.

The cause of the fire was still undetermined, but Senti said it could have potentially started because of a cigarette that had not been put out or a lamp that overheated.

One man was treated for minor smoke inhalation, Senti said.

A worried homeowner and neighbors were overjoyed when firefighters were able to rescue and remove a second pet cat from the smoke-filled house, according to witness Lou Minutoli.

The Lakeview Fire Department was the primary department on the scene, while the Malverne Fire Department provided assistance.

Nassau County Fire Marshals were also on the scene to handle a propane cylinder that was stored in the garage.
