Long Island Teacher Of The Week: Nkenge Gilliam
The Elmont Memorial High School social studies teacher leads the school's distinguished Model UN club.
ELMONT, NY — Every teacher deserves praise. They work tirelessly and do so much more than just educate students. They can be role models, leaders, therapists, confidants and more.
Some teachers really go above and beyond, though. One teacher that deserves a special shout-out is Nkenge Gilliam, a social studies teacher at Elmont Memorial High School. Gilliam is also the advisor of the school's Model United Nations club, which has won multiple awards and commendations.
Gilliam was nominated as Teacher of the Week by Carine Jocelyn. Here's what she had to say:

I would like to nominate Ms. Nkenge Gilliam, an excellent teacher from Elmont Memorial High School who instills a sense of pride, Black excellence and reinforces self confidence in all of her students.
Elmont Memorial High School is recognized for its exceptional expertise in winning at national Model UN competitions. When the Model UN Elmont team is competing, they do it with fervor, knowledge, superior presentation skills and clarity. I know this well as my daughter Nicole and her fellow students excelled at Model UN competitions, including winning top prizes at the esteemed University of Chicago competition. It is without a doubt the all-around educational support from her Elmont teachers and Ms. Gilliam that allowed her to become a distinguished scholar at American University in Washington, DC on a full scholarship.
I want to personally thank Ms. Gilliam for her continued efforts, no-nonsense approach and instilling in youth of color that — despite what society may often tell them — they can win at anything in life if they put their best effort and minds to it. Her positive messaging and affirmations supports the messages that, as a parent, I share with my children daily.
Congratulations to Nkenge Gilliam! Thank you for all that you do!
