Lynbrook High School Newspaper Becomes a Success Story
Student publication wins 28 awards, including one for best all-around publication, at New York press competition.

Student journalists at Lynbrook High School made headlines of their own at the recent Empire State Scholastic Press Association competition.
Horizon, the Lynbrook High School newspaper under the guidance of adviser Jessica Sanders, won 28 awards in the annual competition, including a gold award for best all-around publication and a silver award for the staff’s front page portfolio. Every year schools from across New York compete for the awards, which are hosted by Syracuse University.
Students also won individual honors, including seven gold, five silver, five bronze and nine honorable mention awards.

Gold awards went to Elaine Chen for feature writing, Elisabeth DiCarmine and Irma Purisic for their designers’ portfolio, Madeline Fink for her review-writing portfolio, Emily Flyer and Dan Walocha for the editorial page, Marshall Ivler for news photography, Ryan Moelis for sports feature and Tali Zingman for news story.
Earning silver awards were Nicole Bien for feature writing, Lauren Hernandez for personality interview story, Evan Schneider for sports feature, Amanda Swanson for sports news and Zingman for in-depth coverage.

Bronze awards were won by Gabe Ajzenman for news story, Flyer and Walocha for editorial page and Zach Pekale for sports news. Bronze awards also went to DiCarmine and Purisic for front-page design portfolio and Libby Berman, DiCarmine and Purisic for feature layout portfolio.
Honorable mention awards were received by Ajzenman for news story and in-depth news coverage, Molly Carter and Diana Farrell for personality interview story, DiCarmine for in-depth coverage, Ivler for news photography, Eve Moelis and Purisic for picture layout, Ryann Moelis for personality interview story, Sam Moelis for sports feature and Amanda Swanson for sports news.
