This story was written by Rosemary Leonetti:
As part of their Ecology Week celebration, students at the Lynbrook Kindergarten Center gathered together to plant a “Penny Tree.”
Each student had brought in 100 pennies on the 100th Day of School to buy the “Penny Tree” and a plaque commemorating the tree as a gift from the Class of 2025.
Then during their celebration of Ecology Week, all the students in the school took part in the planting by adding a shovelful of dirt to help give the tree an auspicious beginning.
This is part of an annual Kindergarten Center tradition, leaving an environmental legacy of Penny Trees spanning 15 years. The first tree was planted by Lynbrook’s first full-day kindergarten class in 1999.
To add to the festivities, the kindergartners sang songs to celebrate the earth while wearing ecology-themed hats that they made from 100 percent recycled materials. Each hat served as a personal statement on the importance of protecting the environment for future generations.
