Malverne Grad Displays Award-Winning Photos in Garden City

After We Cleaned the Basement, the name Dave Paone gave to the photo featured above, was a special shot for the award-wining photojournalist and Malverne High School graduate.

"I took [it] of my parents in 1980, when I was 16. It's the oldest picture in my portfolio," says Paone. "Since I lost my mother three years ago and then my , I thought using the picture for the invitation was the right thing to do."

It's one of the many interesting photographs in Paone's latest exhibit, which is on display at the Garden City Public Library until Sept. 29. (A reception will be held Sept. 8 from 1- 3 p.m. All are invited to attend.) The collection features a wide variety of subjects artfully captured in photographs, which each seem to tell a different story. 

Included in the exhibit is , a photograph of two teens hanging out in Malverne in 1981, which Paone shot when he was 17 and still a student at Malverne High School. You may recall that it earned an award from the North Shore Art Guild.

Paone, who has a B.F.A. with honors from the School of Visual Arts and NYS art teacher certification, K–12, also earned an award for his series of photographs and accompanying profiles on Patch, titled "Meet Your Neighbors," from the earlier this year. He continues to write and shoot for Patch as well as Community College Campus News, a newspaper for community colleges throughout New York.  His other work includes a photographic essay, Keeping the Faith: Photographs of Catholic School Children, which he shot during college.

Subsequently, Paone worked as an assistant cameraman for the motion picture industry on Law & Order, New York News (with Mary Tyler Moore), Rear Window (with Christopher Reeve), Stuart Little 2 and Billy Joel Live at Yankee Stadium. He wrote about his experiences trying to make it in the entertainment industry in his autobiography, Mickey Rooney Was Right, which was published in 2010 through Author House.
