Nassau Begins Improvement Of Dutch Broadway

ELMONT, NY — Nassau County has launched an improvement project on Dutch Broadway in Elmont that will make the roadway safer for driver and pedestrians.

These initial traffic safety improvements, which are drawn from Elmont Traffic Safety Evaluation completed in late January 2020, will be implemented upon the completion of repaving currently underway on Dutch Broadway between Elmont Road and the Queens county line.

During re-striping, westbound Dutch Broadway, from Ridge Road to the Queens border, will go from two lanes to one to reduce speeding in the area. The change will also increase the amount of space available to travel on foot or by bicycle, which will be especially beneficial for students at nearby Elmont Memorial Junior-Senior High School. In addition, the County is installing a rectangular rapid flashing beacon at 238th Street and a flashing driver feedback device west of Astor Street to alert speeding drivers to slow down.

“As county executive, my number one priority is protecting the health and safety of our residents,” County Executive Laura Curran said. “By studying the issue and listening to the community, we were able to come together and prioritize solutions that will make our sidewalks and roads safer for everyone who calls Elmont home.”

Until repaving and re-striping are complete, residents should expect traffic delays and are encouraged to plan alternative routes if necessary. County officials said that further improvements are being considered and studied for next year.

Prior to completion of the traffic study, Legislator Carrié Solages worked with Curran, community stakeholders and the Department of Public Works to secure improvements, such as additional lighting, new crosswalk indicators and speed indicator signs, while the traffic study was underway.

“By committing to these essential upgrades, Nassau County is following a roadmap charted by traffic experts that will bolster public safety along one of our most important roadways,” Solages said. “I thank County Executive Curran for hearing the community’s call for improvements to Dutch Broadway and supporting an infrastructure investment that will improve quality of life in Elmont and make our roads safer for every motorist, bicyclist and walker who utilizes them in the years to come.”
