HEMPSTEAD, NY. — Viviana Russell has emerged victorious in the race to represent the 2nd district in the Nassau County Legislature, defeating Republican Pepitz Blanchard with 6,386 votes, making up 67.22 percent of the votes cast. Blanchard collected 3,110 votes, or 32.74 percent of the votes, according to unofficial results from the Nassau County Board of Elections.

Russell will replace previous 2nd-district legislator Olena Nicks, who ran for and won Seth Koslow’s old seat in the 5th district. Koslow lost a high-profile race to County Executive Bruce Blakeman Tuesday, but Democrats neither gained nor lost a seat in the shuffle.

For Russell, a 12-year veteran of North Hempstead’s town board, the campaign was a chance to highlight redevelopment projects undertaken in the Town, including the “Yes We Can” Community Center, a $26 million facility that opened in 2012.
