Split Decision 'Forecast' Among Long Island Groundhogs

Malverne Mel and Holtsville Hal have differing predictions for the rest of the winter.

MALVERNE, NY — Groundhog Day, the opportunity for the rodents to become meteorologists for a day.

With that in mind, Malverne Mel saw his shadow on Tuesday morning. According to the holiday lore, it means six more weeks of winter.

However, for those looking to see an end to the cold and snow, Holtsville Hal did not see his shadow, predicting an early spring.

The same "forecast" came from Chuck on Staten Island, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin tweeted.

However, the most famous groundhog of them all, of course, is Punxsutawney Phil, who is anticipating six more weeks of winter.
