Town Of Hempstead Looks To Take Over Closed West Hempstead Motel

Supervisor Clavin said they want to transform the Capri Motor Inn into "something positive for the community."

WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY — The Town of Hempstead is taking steps to gain control of a West Hempstead motel.

Supervisor Don Clavin said in the beginning stages of pursuing eminent domain over the Capri Motor Inn. The town shut the motel in August due to safety violations.

A town board hearing is scheduled for next month to address the matter and help "identify the community's desire for the property and act accordingly," Clavin said.

The board alleged on Oct. 3, according to Newsday, evidence of prostitution, narcotics activity and other criminal elements at the Capri.

Clavin said the town's intention is "transforming [the Capri Motor Inn] into something positive for the community."
