The Valley Stream 24 School District Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Unal Karakas, held their annual retreat last month to set goals and priorities for the upcoming year while reflecting on the district’s continued progress.
The retreat focused on advancing initiatives that continuously support student achievement, well-being, and preparation for success in the 21st century. Building on the district’s accomplishments, the Board and leadership team reaffirmed their commitment to innovation, connection, and excellence in education.
Last year, the district introduced redesigned classrooms and launched Vision 2030 pilot projects aimed at creating future-ready learning environments. This year, those efforts are expanding with additional redesigned classrooms and the introduction of departmentalization at the sixth-grade level. Under this model, students rotate between specialized teachers and classrooms, mirroring the structure of middle and high school. This approach supports independence, deeper learning, and readiness for the next steps in each student’s educational journey.
