Valley Stream 24 School District Honors Retiring Board of Education Trustee Kim Wheeler

Mrs. Wheeler Retires from Board After Nine Years of Service to the Community

After nine years of dedicated service to the Valley Stream 24 Board of Education and community, Kim Wheeler has retired. She was succeeded by Annette Matthew, a district parent and Brooklyn Avenue School PTA member, who was elected to the Valley Stream 24 School District Board of Education in May and sworn in at its reorganization meeting on July 1st.

"After nine years of unwavering service, Trustee Wheeler leaves behind a legacy of integrity, compassion, and tireless dedication to our students, staff, and community,” said Melissa Herrera, who served as vice president last year and was elected president on July 1st.

“Her commitment to educational excellence and her steady voice at the table will be deeply missed but long remembered,” she added. “We are grateful for her leadership and the lasting impact she has made.”

“It's really tough for me to see Kim leave the Board of Education. More than just a colleague, she has been a true friend to me, and honestly, one of the most reliable and effective trustees I've ever had the pleasure of working with,” said Armando Hernandez, who served as president last year and will serve as a trustee for the 2025-2026 school year.

“Kim was driven by two guiding principles, to do what was best for the interest of the students, and to do it in a fiscally responsible manner,” he added. “We're all going to deeply miss her impact in the boardroom.”
