last Words on Massapequa School Budget

The massapequa School District will hold their annual budget hearing Thursday. What do you think of the spending plan?

Thursday marks the final step in the school budget process before Massapequa residents vote on it.

The Massapequa School District will hold its annual budget hearing on the $186 million spending plan.

It includes a 3.19 percent tax levy which is allowable under the state tax cap, but after subtracting state aid, local revenue, reserves and fund balance, the total increase from a year ago is at 1.49 percent.

When the budget process started, officials needed to close a $6million budget gap, and they did so in part by eliminating 35 teaching positions. District officials insist that declining enrollment and not fiscal woes brought about the layoffs.

We want to know what you think about the budget before it comes to a May 21 vote. Do you support it? Do you agree with the decisions officials made to put it together?

How do you feel about the tax cap as time passes. Do you support it? Has your opinion changed over time?
