Local Officials Offer Information on Power Restoration in the Flood Zone

After days of confusion, some local officials are providing information about how residents who live in flood zones like the areas of Massapequa below Merrick Road, can have their homes re-energized.

The Town of Oyster Bay has put out information about the steps homeowners need to take on their website, while Assemb. Joseph Saladino, R-Massapequa, also contacted Massapequa Patch with details. 

According to the town, LIPA has hired contractors to inspect homes in flood areas to see if power can be safely turned back on.

Homeowners will have to be able to let inspectors in to the home, but if nobody is home when the inspectors arrive, they will leave information on your door, telling you who to contact to make an appointment.

Saladino told Patch that the inspectors will put stickers on the door indicating the status of the home.

A green sticker will mean that the home is safe and can be re-energized. A yellow sticker will indicate that some work needs to be done.

A red sticker will mean that the major work needs to be done and the home will not be deemed safe.

If all the homes on a circuit have green stickers, LIPA will restore power to the that area.  It wasn't immediately clear what would happen if the majority of homes have green stickers but some don't.

According to the Town, owners of homes that are deemed unsafe will have to hire a licensed electrician to make repairs.

They will then need to have a private certified electrical inspector examine  repair work, and the inspection agency will provide LIPA with an inspection certificate. Once LIPA receives the  certificate, power can be restored.
