Massapequa Fire Chief: 'Stay Off the Roads'

Massapequa Fire Chief Stephen Daresta says he's seeing too many people on the roads, even as his department is already rescuing people who've been trapped in their homes.

"I was driving along Sunrise Highway and it looks like a regular Monday there," Daresta said.  "People need to stay off roads."

Daresta once again said that residnts should have evacauted from areas south of Merrick Road a while ago.

Conditions are expected to deteriorate further as early as late Tuesday afternoon going into evening, but Daresta said his department has already made rescues at three homes, including one on Park Boulevard.

Meanwhile, Massapequa Mayor James Altadonna is telling residents that anyone who needs to rport an issue related to the storm should contact Village Hall.

"Conditions are deteriorating rapidly," the mayor said. 

Crews will stay out as long as they can and will also be on the job at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Altadonna said.

More than a 1,900 customers briefly lost power in Massapequa Park Monday morning. That was quickly restored, but 168 Massapequa Park customers were in the dark as of 2 p.m. along with 211 in North Massapequa, 82 in East Massapequa and nine in Massapequa.
