Massapequa's Picture Perfect Homecoming

Even Mother Nature was a Chief on Homecoming Saturday.

Students, teachers, administrators and local officials all gathered for the annual parade as the cloudless sky seemed to match the school colors.

"We have blue skies and golden sunshine," Massapequa School Superintendent Charles Sulc said just before the annual parade stepped off.

The line of march was led by Grand Marshal Don Nobile, a teacher and administrator in the district for more than 40 years before his retirement a year ago.

"It's quite an honor," Nobile said, adding that he learned of his selection after receiving a phone call from athletic director John Piropato two weeks ago.

"I was speechless," Nobile said, "It came out of the blue."

Nobile, who took a leading role in organizing Berner Middle School's 50th anniversary celebration, said being Grand Marshal "is a great way to keep in touch with the district.

The longtime educator said he enjoys the freedom of retirement but added, "Once or twice a week, my thoughts turn to Berner."

Several elected officials were on hand including Assemb. Joseph Saladino, R-Massapequa, an MHS alumnus who said, "As a Massapequa Chief, who grew up in this community, and attended this great school, I'm so proud to be part of a community with great parents and kids who want to be involved."

Also on hand were Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto, who has three children attending school in the district and Massapequa Park Mayor James Altadonna.

The march down Park Boulevard was a colorful spectacle as cheerleaders, band members and various school clubs all showed off their talents.

Massapequa High School Principal, Dr. Barbara Williams  summed up the spirit of the day before the Chiefs defeated Hempstead in the homecoming football game, saying, "This is the one day the community and the schools come together to celebrate all that's blue and gold...And on a good day, the football team wins."
