A Massapequa High School teacher has been honored by the Harvard club of Long Island after one of her former students nominated her for the honor.
Alice Alercon, an English teacher at MHS, was named a "Distinguished Teacher of 2013, at a recently.
The thirteen-year veteran of the school received the backing of Harvard University freshman Lauren Reisig, who was Massapequa's salutatorian last year.
Alarcon was “one of the most dynamic individuals you will ever meet," Reisig said. " She is brilliant, but not arrogant. She is tough, but caring. She is just absolutely wonderful.”
Among the courses Alacorn teaches are SCALE Composition, AP Language and composition and 10th grade Regents English.
“Alice Alarcon consistently goes above and beyond to help her students meet and exceed her high expectations,” said Kevin Harrington, the district's English Language Arts Curriculum Associate. “Massapequa Public Schools is so lucky to have her as a member of its faculty.”
Alacorn was honored to receive the award given to a dozen teachers from Long Island districts.
“Harvard is a name associated with excellence in education, and I share my award with my students, my colleagues, parents and the district because when one succeeds, we all succeed,” she said.
