If you're a beer lover, a new Massapequa pub can get you some of your favorite brews without the wait.
American Social Kitchen and Cocktails on Merrick Road is the first bar and grill on Long Island to offer a self-serve beer tap. If you’re sick of waiting for the bartender to notice you you can reserve two tables that offer the service.
Owner John Marchisotto was aiming to open his new bar and grill in November, but Hurricane Sandy delayed the opening until early January.
Marchisotto, a Brooklyn native who currently resides in Massapequa, has always loved the location of the bar, so when it went up for sale it was a no-brainer for him.
The same location has served as a sports pub for over 30 years, according to Marchisotto, but his vision for American Social was slightly different. “I wanted everyone to feel comfortable here,” he said, “Sports are shown on the TVs, but it’s not over the top.” The bar and grill is even kid-friendly during the day and for dinner.
The two tables at American Social that offer the table-tap service seat up to 15 people and can be reserved in advance. Those who sit there must be over 21 and IDs are checked. There are four taps at each table and with adequate notice; they can be filled with the beers of your choice.
Currently there are 20 different taps to choose from, including Blue Point, Blue Moon and Founders. There is no extra charge to sit at these particular tables, but Marchisotto says that there is a $300 spending minimum, between the beer, liquor and food, for parties sitting there.
Waitress service is still provided for ordering food and liquor but the flow of beer is endless at the simple touch of a lever. Marchisotto compares the tap to a gas pump, saying, “It’s computerized, as soon as you turn it on it tells you down to the tenth how much you pour, and you pay by the ounce.”
The bar and grill offers a contemporary-American feel to its patrons and there is even a unique garage door style window, creating a bright and open atmosphere. Marchisotto, a former Marine, says he loved the idea having anything American, whether old or new. There’s a vintage musket hanging on one of the walls and an old clock right above it, which was passed down from his father.
Having never owned a restaurant before, Marchisotto says his managing style is based on providing the type of service he would like to receive himself. Guests can come in for dinner and choose from a variety of American style dishes, including skirt steak and tacos, before staying to enjoy drinks at the more casual bar. On most weekends, there is even live acoustic music. Happy hour specials include half-price drinks every Monday through Friday, 3-7 p.m.
Whether you are looking for a new menu to try or interested in being your own bartender for a night, American Social is an exciting new spot to check out.
