Officials Offer Aid in Massapequa

Parts of the Massapequa area were seeing significant power restoration on Monday although thousands were still in the dark as well.

By noon, there were still 2, 450 LIPA customers without power in Massapequa and 1,543 without power in North Massapequa, according to LIPA's website.

But things were better in East Massapequa where 490 were without power and Massapequa Park, where all but 549 customers had power restored.

Despite this, Village Mayor James Altadonna said he will continue to push for service until all residents get the juice back.

Altadonna said that Village Hall was open again Monday and anyone in the Massapequas, even non-village residents were welcome to come.

"You can come in, warm up, use a phone and charge a phone, if you need to," he said.

The Village is also supplying meals ready to eat, to the public, the mayor said.

The gas situation in the village was also difficult. As of Monday morning, the two stations that had the ability to pump gas, had run out, the mayor said, noting that information can change quickly.

The waiting game continued in the area, the mayor said.

"We've seen the very best and the very worst in people," he said adding tempers have frayed among residents due to "LIPA's ineffectiveness."

One area that's still of concern to Altadonna is Biltmore Shores, where many homes have been damaged by the storm. The mayor said workers are going to have to go house to house, before restoring power because there are fears that turning power back on in some damaged homes could spark fires.

The areas south of Merrick Road are stating secure as police are patrolling the area and checking identification at night to make sure that  only residents and their guest go into the area.

The Town of Oyster Bay is continuing to clothing they received as part of a relief drive to residents who go to Marjorie Post Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The town is also distributing bottled water and meals ready to eat at Marjorie Post from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
