State Police Issue Hundreds Of Tickets On LI Over July 4 Weekend

From July 2 through 5, state troopers issued more than 450 tickets and arrested more than a dozen people for DWI, the state said.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A statewide crackdown on distracted and drunken driving over the July 4 holiday weekend led to hundreds of tickets being issued across Long Island, and more than a dozen arrests for DWI.

State police were on increased patrols from July 2 through 5. Troopers issued 10,238 tickets across the state, and arrested 195 people for DWI.

"Putting others in danger by driving impaired is unacceptable in the state of New York and those who do it will be held accountable," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a release. "Thank you to the women and men of law enforcement around the state who patrol our streets to keep us safe. Lives were saved this holiday weekend because of your hard work and dedication to the people you serve."

Here on Long Island, troopers issued 457 tickets during the four-day period. There were 134 tickets issued for speeding violations, 25 for distracted driving, 15 for child restraint violations and 16 move over violations, among many other smaller offenses. Police also arrested 18 people across Long Island for driving while intoxicated.

More tickets and arrests were made this year than last year, according to the state. In 2020, troopers issued 8,214 tickets and made 180 DWI arrests during a similar enforcement period.
