Sulc Receives Foreign Language Award

Massapequa School Superintendent Charles Sulc will be honored this week by the New State Association of Foreign Language Teachers.

Sulc will receive the organization's Sister Rose Aquin Caimano Distinguished Administrator Award Friday at their annual conference in Saratoga Springs.

The award is given to an administrator who gives outstanding support to foreign language education.

"Mr. Sulc has touched the lives of tens of thousands of students, teachers, administrators and parents,” William Anderson, the district’s LOTE [Language other than English] curriculum associate, wrote in his nomination.

Sulc has been a driving force behind the growth of the district's Mandarin Chinese program and has kept German in the district's curriculum during a time when other districts are eliminating some languages.

He was also an advocate of Janice Kincaid, a Spanish teacher, who last year became the first teacher in the district to earn National Board Certification, a prestigious advance teaching certification.

 “Charles Sulc’s legacy in the district includes not only the selection of an excellent teaching and supervisory staff but his ability, as an instructional leader, to maintain language programs that continue to flourish,” Lucille Iconis, assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction said.

In addition to German, Mandarin and Spanish, the district also offers French, Latin and American Sign Language at the Regents and college levels.
