The School District and February Break

New York State requires students to be in school a minimum of 180 days.

Most years that's not a problem in the Massapequa School district, but this year isn't like most years.

The Massapequa School Distrrict voted this week to cancel February break from Feb. 19 through Feb. 22 to make up for the school days that were lost in october and November due to Hurricane Sandy.

The district will also use a snow emergency day on May 24.

School officials had a tough decision to make and not making up the days would result in loss of state aid. Superintendent Charles Sulc argued that waiting until later means assuming that there will be no bad weather this winter, which would cancel more days.
