Where You'll Be Able To Buy Legal Marijuana On Long Island

LONG ISLAND, NY — Marijuana for personal use has been decriminalized in New York most of this year. And in 2022, recreational cannabis is expected to start going on sale.

However, if you're looking to buy marijuana products, you won't be able to get them everywhere.

When Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act earlier this year, a provision gave local governments the authority to opt-out of the sale of recreational marijuana within their boundaries. In doing so, they also forfeit the tax revenue that would come from the sale of marijuana. In order to opt out, municipalities need to pass a law by Dec. 31 declaring it.

Any municipality that opts out can later pass a law to allow the sale of marijuana products. But municipalities that allow it to start cannot change that.

Many towns on Long Island have opted to ban the sale of recreational marijuana. However, some villages within those towns have allowed it. There are also many villages that have not passed ordinances to ban the sale. They will default to allowing sales if they do not, which will be allowed withing towns that have put bans in place.

The Rockefeller Institute of Government has been tracking where marijuana sales will be allowed across the state. As of Dec. 28, here's where you'll be able to purchase marijuana products on Long Island when they go on sale:

Nassau County

• Village of Oyster Bay Cove

Suffolk County

• Town of Babylon
• Town of Brookhaven
• Town of Riverhead
• Town of Southampton

There are also some municipalities that haven't declared anything one way or the other. If they don't, they will default to allowing marijuana sales. They are:

• Village of Centre Island
• Village of Cove Neck
• Village of East Hills
• Village of Kensington
• Village of Kings Point
• Village of Lake Success
• Village of Laurel Hollow
• Village of Matinecock
• Village of Mill Neck
• Village of Plandome
• Village of Roslyn Harbor
• Village of Saddle Rock
• Village of Sands Point

Suffolk County

• Village of Asharoken
• Village of Belle Terre
• Village of Head of the Harbor
• Village of Huntington Bay
• Village of Lake Grove
