MEDFORD, NY — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages, and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Jodi Moran who nominated her son, eighth-grader Logan of Medford.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Logan’s story is that of a true underdog. He was quiet and shy as a child, but has now grown into an exceptional teen.

In 2019, Logan began volunteering at Almost Home Animal Rescue & Adoption, Inc. where he learned that rewards for hard work and dedication are not just material or financial. He gained empathy for the resident animals, communication skills, and advocacy. Volunteering at a rescue is both physically and mentally exhausting. Tears are common, but so are the feelings of gratitude, satisfaction, and courage — a quality Logan didn’t realize he had in him. But advocating for those without a voice gave him the strength to grow as an active community member, eventually expanding on his service to include supporting the local VFW Post 2937, and other Medford community fundraisers and events.

He is fortunate to have surrounded himself with individuals within the community who give him the opportunity to get involved, and they inspired him to continue with his community service.

Logan’s personal growth can also be seen in school.

His grades often land him on the principal’s list, but his attitude has gained him the positive accolades and support of his teacher. Though he can still be quiet, he is not deterred from participating in the mural, yearbook, and makerspace clubs, as well as serving as a crew member for the school musical.

Art is his passion and he is an active member of the district’s music and arts version of a PTA, known as FAME. He is reaching new heights and gaining experience with the help of his peers and mentors alike, and with the encouragement of his family and friends. He understands the value of his efforts, and although gratified by his volunteerism and great grades, he is humbled by his accomplishments. He’s well aware that the work of the rescue will most likely, unfortunately, never end. He loves showing respect for our local veterans, and he enjoys being a part of his community’s engagements.

He truly is a star student.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Everyone should know that Logan is quiet, but caring and hard-working. He is funny, yet serious. He thinks deeply, but can be lighthearted. He loves art and animals, and is loyal to his friends.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Logan!
