JFK Student Earns Long Island History Day Award

Sydney Guye, a student at John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore, was honored with the “Outstanding Senior Entry on Genocide, Bias or Tolerance” award when she participated in the Long Island History Day competition at Hofstra University earlier this spring.

Guye was selected by the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center of Nassau County for her paper, titled “Sylvia Rivera, Stonewalled: Sylvia Rivera’s Fight for Transgender Right.” Guye participated in the Hofstra competition along with fellow classmates Sydney Tepper and Justin Shapiro.

The Long Island History Day is an academic program whereby students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews and historic sites. After they analyze and interpret the data drawn from their sources, students present their work with original papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries.
