Superintendent: All Students Are OK

The 14 Camp Avenue School students who were taken to the hospital on Thursday were released.

David Feller, superintendent of North Merrick Schools, said that the 14 Camp Avenue School students who were transported to the hospital after a minor oil burner puff back on Thursday, are doing well.

"I am pleased to report that all of the children who were taken to the hospital were assessed, are OK, and have been released," he said in a letter to parents.

According to Feller, a maintenance man was doing routine work on a boiler located on the lower level of the school when he noticed a plume come out of it and then shut the boiler down.

"There was a class of sixth graders not too far from where the boiler was," Feller said. "When the children started feeling sick, we brought it to the nurse's attention and decided to call 911."

He said that the air quality in the building is "100 percent safe."

"School will be open for business tomorrow morning at our usual time," he said.
