3 Minors Accused Of Having Illegal Weapon In Kingston

The sheriff's office said they all face other charges, including reckless endangerment.

KINGSTON, NY — Three young people were arrested after being accused of having an illegal weapon after an investigation into a shooting in Kingston.

The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office said law enforcement was sent around 5:45 p.m. Sunday to a home on Myers Road in the town of Kingston for a 911 call about the home being struck by gunfire.

Officials said the preliminary investigation involved a suspect vehicle that was located about 30 minutes later as it crossed the Mid-Hudson Bridge toward Poughkeepsie.

Three occupants of that vehicle were taken into custody, and the vehicle was impounded, authorities said.

Detectives later obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and the clothing worn by one of the people taken into custody.

The sheriff’s office said the search of the vehicle yielded a loaded .40 caliber handgun.

A 17-year-old town of Esopus girl, a 16-year-old boy from the city of Kingston and a 14-year-old boy from the city of Kingston were charged with the following felonies:

  • Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, loaded firearm
  • Second-degree criminal use of a firearm
  • First-degree reckless endangerment
  • Fourth-degree conspiracy

The 17-year-old was also charged with two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child, for participating in the incident with two boys, authorities said.

The 14-year-old was released to a parent to reappear at Ulster County Probation on a later day for potential juvenile delinquency proceedings in Ulster County Family Court. The two others were arraigned as adolescent offenders in Ulster County Court – Youth Part and were released to reappear on a later date.

No identities were released because the three may qualify for juvenile delinquent/youthful offender status.

Detectives were assisted by the New York State Police and Ulster County District Attorney’s Office. The investigation is continuing, and additional charges are possible.
