76-Year-Old Woman Hit By Car In Red Hook Saved By Good Samaritans

Police said a 90-year-old man was unaware the woman was behind his car when he backed out of a parking space.

RED HOOK, NY — A 76-year-old woman who was hit by a car was saved by two good Samaritans Friday in Red Hook.

The Red Hook Police Department said the woman was walking in the parking lot of the Extra Mart at 2 West Market St. around 2:20 p.m. when a 2017 Buick driven by a 90-year-old Red Hook man was backing out of a parking space.

He struck the woman who fell to the ground behind the vehicle, police said.

The driver was not aware he had hit the woman, police said, and continued backing up.

That caused the woman to become trapped under his car.

A quick acting person who had seen the incident ran to help the woman and stopped the driver from backing up even more.

Another person helped the first person to get the woman out from under the car.

The woman suffered minor injuries to her shoulder and legs and was taken by emergency medical technicians to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Police said no tickets were issued, but the investigation is ongoing.

Red Hook police were assisted at the scene by the Red Hook Fire Department and Northern Dutchess Paramedics.
