Army Sergeant From Newburgh Accused Of Murder In Ulster County

Police said the victim was fatally shot on New Year's Day.

PLATTEKILL, NY — A Newburgh man was accused fatally shooting an Ulster County man in January.

Members of the New York State Police – Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the United States Army Criminal Investigation Division arrested Junando Dawkins, 29, of Newburgh, at the U.S. Army base in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, March 7.

He was charged with second-degree murder and three counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, felonies.

Police said the arrest was the result of an investigation into the Jan. 1 shooting death of Daniel Spotards, 41, of Plattekill.

Dawkins was brought back to New York by state troopers and arraigned March 10.

He was sent to the Ulster County Jail without bail.

Dawkins is a sergeant in the U.S. Army and was taken into custody as he was about to be deployed overseas, News 12 reported.
