Child Injured In Thruway Rollover Crash In Newburgh

A car on the side of the roadway reentered the driving lane, causing another car to roll over, police said.

NEWBURGH, NY — A 6-year-old child was sent to the hospital after a rollover crash on the state Thruway.

The New York State Police said troopers were sent around 10:30 a.m. Monday to investigate a personal injury crash on northbound Interstate 87 in the town of Newburgh.

Authorities said the crash occurred in the area of mile marker 61.9, between exit 17 (Newburgh) and exit 18 (New Paltz).

The preliminary investigation at the scene found that a 2022 Toyota Tundra was parked on the right shoulder when the driver, Peter W. Nugent, 42, of Sharon, Connecticut, reentered the roadway into the path of a 2011 Toyota Venza.

The Venza, which was being driven by Melissa R. Edmond, 39, of Troy, Rensselaer County, overturned into the median.

A 6-year-old passenger in the Venza was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center for severe lacerations.

No other injuries were reported, police said.

Nugest was issued a traffic ticket as a result of the crash.
