Off-Duty Officer Who Shot Knife-Wielding Man During Road Rage Dispute, Is Put On Administrative Duty: KPD

The wounded driver was initially taken to Garnet Health Medical Center, but was transferred to Westchester Medical Center.

WAWAYANDA, NY — A police officer has been placed on administrative duty after a road rage incident in Orange County turned tragic.

A confrontation between two drivers turned violent, ending with an off-duty officer involved in the dispute shooting another driver, who had pulled a knife, according to New York State Police.

On Thursday, around 3:45 p.m., troopers from the New York State Police Middletown barracks responded to a reported shooting on Dolsontown Road, near the intersection of McVeigh Road, in the Town of Wawayanda.

Investigators said a 2020 Volkswagen and a 2021 Toyota pickup truck were involved in a road rage incident that spanned approximately one mile along Dolsontown Road. The confrontation escalated when the driver of the Volkswagen, identified as 31-year-old Wallace F. Fisher, of Middletown, exited his vehicle and approached the driver of the Toyota. An argument took place at the driver's side window of the Toyota and soon turned physical, with Fisher brandishing a knife.

At that point, the driver of the Toyota, identified as 33-year-old Anthony Simon, an off-duty Kingston Police Department officer, shot Fisher.

Fisher was initially taken to Garnet Health Medical Center, but was transferred to Westchester Medical Center where he is listed in critical but stable condition, according to New York State Police.

"The Kingston Police Department is aware of the off-duty officer involved shooting involving KPD Officer Anthony Simon that occurred in the town of Wawayanda at approximately 4 p.m. on
December 11, 2025," the department said in a statement released on Friday. "Officer Simon, who has been employed by the Kingston Police since March 2022, has been placed on Administrative duty until such time that the criminal investigation by the NY State Police and the Orange County District Attorney's Office has been concluded. Officer Simon is a uniformed officer assigned to the patrol division."

State police was assisted by the City of Middletown Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff's Office, Greenville Township Volunteer Ambulance, and Wawayanda EMS.

NYSP said the investigation is ongoing.
