Flood Watch In Effect For Hudson Valley Region: NWS

The National Weather Service issued an alert Friday afternoon for the impending rainfall.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The chance for flooding has increased for the lower Hudson Valley region, with forecasters predicting heavy rain tonight and into early Saturday.

The National Weather Service said a flood watch is in effect from Friday through Saturday at 11 a.m. The watch covers northern and southern Westchester, Orange, Putnam, and Rockland counties in New York.

An area of low pressure is predicted to move through overnight and bring between one to two inches of rainfall, with some spots potentially getting more than three inches, according to an alert.

The worst part of the system will be between 10 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service predicts.

The rainfall could lead to excessive runoff, which may cause scattered cases of flash flooding, particularly in urban and poor drainage areas, and in some rivers, creeks and streams, according to the National Weather Service.

Residents throughout the region are urged to monitor forecasts in case the flood watch turns into a flood warning.

Here are the forecast details for the lower Hudson Valley area via the National Weather Service, as of Friday at 3 p.m.:

Friday Night: A chance of showers, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 11 p.m. Low around 57. South wind around 6 mph becoming east after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday: Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 71. West wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8 p.m., then a chance of showers between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50. West wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 67. West wind 13 to 15 mph.

Friday night: A chance of rain and thunderstorms, then rain and possibly a thunderstorm after 11 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 57. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Saturday: Rain, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 69. Northwest wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49. West wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 67. West wind 7 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
