Mid-Hudson Valley Offers Many Memorial Day Events

There are many Memorial Day events to choose from in the Hudson Valley

The Hudson Valley offers many Memorial Day events to celebrate the contributions made by servicemen and women. Here are a few events organized by date:

May 28

Hyde Park military display: The Roosevelt Library and The Duffle Bag of Patterson present a weekend of historic military displays at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, Henry A. Wallace Center, Route 9. The military display will feature e-enactors in battle dress, as well as members of the 240th Military Police Battalion, a National Park Service and Roosevelt Library living history program. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 28 and 29.

Newburgh distributes flags: The Memorial Day Parade Committee will distribute flags from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City of Newburgh Activity Center, 401 Washington Street. The flags can be used to decorate veterans’ graves.

Milan parade and ceremony: The Milan Veterans Committee and Milan Town Board Point will host a parade and ceremony beginning at noon, starting at Milan Town Hall, 20 Wilcox Circle, off Route 199.

Pawling ceremony: Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and the American Legion will host a Memorial Day ceremony starting at 11:30 a.m. at the church at 22 Coulter Avenue.

City of Newburgh parade: The Memorial Day Parade Committee will visit area cemeteries and monuments to lay wreaths and hold Color Guard services, The motorcade leaves the former American Legion Hall at 62 Grand Street at 8:30 a.m.

Town of Newburgh parade: The parade begins at American Legion post 1420 at 1 p.m., then proceeds down Route 200, east on Route 52 and ends at Algonquin Park.

Monroe parade: The parade starts at 1:30 p.m. at Smith Clove Park, 133 Spring Street in Monroe. It will stop at Veterans Memorial Park, Route 17M, and conclude with a wreath laying ceremony at the Monroe Cemetery.

Poughkeepsie ceremony: The City of Poughkeepsie and American Legion Lafayette Post No. 37 will host a ceremony at 2 p.m. at Soldier & Sailor Fountain on South Avenue.

Poughkeepsie Walkway ceremony: Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro and Dutchess County Division of Veterans Services will host a ceremony at 8 p.m. at Walkway Over the Hudson, 61 Parker Avenue. The ceremony will illuminate the walkway at the flagpole in its center.

Poughkeepsie service: The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Poughkeepsie, located 67 South Randolph Avenue will hold a service to honor veterans at 10:30 a.m.

May 30

Amenia parade and ceremony: The Town of Amenia, VFW Post No. 5444 and Amenia and Wassaic volunteer firefighters will host a parade and ceremony beginning at 10:45. The parade begins at Fountain Square, Routes 22 and 44.

Beacon parade and ceremony: American Legion Beacon Post No. 203 hosts a Sailor service, parade and ceremony at 8:30 and 10 a.m. at Fishkill Creek Bridge. For more information, call 845-527-4010.

Beacon Memorial Day Hike: The Adirondack Mountain Club sponsors a three-hour hike to visit the flag that honors veteran Robert Darcy. Hikers meet at 9:30 at Pocket Road Trail Head. There will be a short ceremony at the site. Confirm if you plan to attend. 845-249-5305.

East Fishkill parade and ceremony: Manny Bacon American Legion Post No. 1758 will host a parade and ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at the East Fishkill Community Center and East Fishkill Veterans Memorial, Route 82 and Beekman Road.

Fishkill parade and ceremony: The Village of Fishkill parade starts lining up at noon at Church Street, with plans to proceed at 1 p.m. A ceremony will take place at Veterans Monument, Main and Broad Streets. The event is hosted by VFW Post No. 1286 and Village of Fishkill.

Fishkill cemetery ceremony: A Memorial Day program will take place at 11 a.m. at the Fishkill Rural Cemetery, Dubois Chapel, 801 Route 9.

Hyde Park parade and ceremony: The Hyde Park Memorial Day parade will line up between 8 and 9 a.m. at the Roosevelt Theater, with plans to start at 10 a.m. The parade will proceed north to the Hyde Park Town Hall and then the War Memorial by Hyde Park American Legion Post No. 1303.

Hyde Park veterans’ art: The Artists Collective of Hyde Park, 4338 Albany Post Road will showcase art by veterans from 1 to 3 p.m.

Hyde Park graveside memorial service: Community organizations will honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt at 1:30 p.m. at the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, Route 9, in the Rose Garden. Park Superintendent Sarah Olson will be the guest speaker.

Kingston parade: The City of Kingston Memorial Day Parade lines up at 1 p.m. at Kingston City Hall, 420 Broadway. The parade will leave from Andrews Street, next to Kingston High School at 1:45 p.m. and march to Kingston Plaza.

Newburgh Memorial Day parade: The parade lines up at 9.a. rain or shine at Newburgh Town Hall, with plans to start at 10 a.m. and end at Washington’s Headquarters Grounds.

Middletown service and parade: The laying of wreaths and the playing of Taps will take place at 9 a.m. at the Town of Wallkill Veterans Memorial Park, Highland Avenue. The parade follows at 10 a.m., stopping at the Armory then to Thrall Park for services.

Monticello service: The Memorial Day service takes place at 10:30 a.m. at the County Government Center, 100 North Street. Refreshments follow at the Monticello Elks Lodge on North Street.

Poughkeepsie memorial: Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro and Dutchess County Division of Veterans Services will host a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Dutchess County War Memorial, Raymond Avenue and Main Street.

Red Hook parade and ceremony: The Red Hook Memorial Day observances begin at 10 a.m. at Red Hook High School and will end at Memorial Square Park. The event is hosted by Red Hook VFW Post No. 7765.

Rhinebeck parade and ceremony: The Memorial Day event begins at 9:15 a.m. with a gun salute at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds. The parade line-up begins at 9:30 a.m. and will leave at 10:30 a.m. from Mulberry Street and Platt Avenue. The parade will go south on Mulberry Street turn on to East Market Street and stop at Village and Town Halls. American Legion Post No. 429 will host the event.

Saugerties ceremony. American Legion Post 72 will host a Memorial Day service at 6 p.m. on the grounds adjacent to the Colonel Roger Dolan Veterans Park, Partition Street. The Saugerties Community Band will play before the service and the Post Military Museum will be open.

Wappingers Falls ceremony and medal presentation: American Legion Post No. 427 and VFW No. 5913 will host a ceremony and medal presentation at 9 a.m. at Mesier Park, Main Street and South Avenue.
