MIDDLETOWN, NY — There are no classes at Middletown High School Friday because of a fight that broke out on campus Thursday.

Amy Creeden, superintendent of Middletown schools, said in a letter to high school families Thursday, that there will be no after-school activities Friday for grades nine through 12.

All kindergarten through eighth-grade schools will be open, she said.

“The high school closure is being implemented out of an abundance of caution and to enable our teams to unpack what took place at Middletown High School today,” Creeden said.

“Rest assured, our teams are committed to fully investigating this matter and holding any individual who was involved in the physical altercation accountable,” she said.

According to the City of Middletown Police Department, there was a “disturbance” in the cafeteria, forcing the school into a “hold-in-place.”

School officials said that meant there was no movement onto or off of the campus. Also, families were not permitted to enter the campus.

The administration said the situation in the cafeteria was under control and all students were safe and the school was receiving support from law enforcement.

There was a staggered dismissal for high school students beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Other than calling it a “physical altercation between high school young people,” Creeden said that the incident did not include any weapons of any kind. No stabbing took place on campus, and no one left the high school by ambulance.

“Please know, this is not the majority of our young people,” she said. “The majority of our young people are incredible members of our school community and role models to their peers.”
