New York State Police Sergeant Killed In East Fishkill Motorcycle Crash

EAST FISHKILL, NY — This morning, state police were called to the scene of a deadly accident involving one of their own.

New York State Police say that on Tuesday, around 6:31 a.m., troopers from the Stormville barracks responded to mile marker 36.1 on the Taconic State Parkway, in the Town of East Fishkill, after receiving a report of a single-vehicle motorcycle collision.

An initial investigation found that a 2025 Ducati motorcycle was traveling south when the operator, identified as Sergeant/Station Commander Nigel K. Barnett, 49, of Poughkeepsie, lost control.

He was ejected from the motorcycle and struck the guardrail on the western shoulder, according to state police.

Despite life-saving measures, Sergeant Barnett was pronounced dead at the scene.

Barnett was a 19-year veteran of the New York State Police, serving most recently as the Station Commander at State Police Cortlandt, Troop K.

"Sgt. Barnett was a dedicated and award-winning public servant, taking pride in helping members of his community on and off duty," New York State Troopers PBA President Charles W. Murphy said. "His courage and compassion embodied the best of public service. Our entire union family mourns Sgt. Barnett’s death and extends our deepest condolences to his family."

State police say the crash remains under investigation.
