Prosecutors said the man grabbed a machete and threw the victim to the floor.

NEWBURGH, NY — An Orange County man was sentenced to prison for breaking into a woman’s house and threatening her with a machete.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said Friday that Angel Lahoz, 36, of Newburgh, was sentenced to 12 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.

He had previously been convicted by a jury of second-degree burglary and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Prosecutors said, on Jan. 2, 2023, a city of Newburgh woman was home alone when she heard noises coming from her living room. She saw a man going through her purse.

As the man walked through the house, the woman saw that the man was Lahoz, a relative of hers.

He grabbed a machete, approached the woman and threw her to the floor.

Lahoz returned to the living room and dropped the weapon which allowed the woman to call the police.

Her husband and brother arrived and took Lahoz outside, where the police took him into custody. It was later determined that Lahoz had entered the home by breaking a bedroom window.

Hoovler said, while no one was injured as a result of the defendant’s actions, he hopes the sentence imposed will offer the victims a degree of closure.

“Breaking into someone’s home to commit a crime is a violent and terrifying offense,” he said. “My office will always prioritize the prosecution of violent felonies and those offenders who drive crime in our communities.”
