Police Officer, Assistant DA Arrested After Domestic Dispute Investigation: NYSP

Charges include child endangerment, strangulation, criminal mischief, false instrument, assault, forgery and stalking, according to cops

DUTCHESS COUNTY, NY — The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) in Rhinebeck says that two high-profile Dutchess County residents were arrested after an investigation into an ongoing domestic abuse case.

State police say investigators found that 28-year-old Anna M. Thompson, of Poughkeepsie, and 29-year-old Michael McDonough-Ewald, of Red Hook, engaged in criminal conduct during the course of their relationship.

Thompson was arrested on July 3, and was charged with misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child. She was arraigned in Dutchess County Family Court and released on her own recognizance. Thompson is scheduled to appear in court on July 23.

McDonough-Ewald was arrested on July 8, and was charged with felony second-degree strangulation, felony second-degree criminal mischief, felony first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, two misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault, two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child, misdemeanor third-degree forgery, misdemeanor second-degree offering a false instrument for filing, and misdemeanor fourth-degree stalking. He was arraigned in Dutchess County Family Court and released under the supervision of the Dutchess County Probation Department. McDonough-Ewald is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday, July 23.

According to media reports, Thompson is an Ulster County Assistant District Attorney, while McDonough-Ewald is a City of Poughkeepsie police officer. Due to having professional relationships with both defendants, the Dutchess County District Attorney has recused his office, and a prosecutor from Columbia County will handle both cases, according to the MidHudson News.
