Prosecutors said the man used a hammer in the double assault.

PORT JERVIS, NY — An Orange County man who was convicted of trying to kill a woman with a hammer found out how much prison time he will be receiving.

District Attorney David Hoovler said Tuesday that Shawn Beach, 43, of Port Jervis, was sentenced to 30 years in prison to be followed by five years of post-release supervision.

He was convicted by a jury in August of two counts of second-degree attempted murder and one count of first-degree assault.

The woman’s 18-year-old son rushed downstairs to help her when he heard her screams.

Beach turned and struck the son in the head with the hammer, fracturing his skull.

The son was treated at Westchester Medical Center for life-threatening injuries, which he survived.

Hoovler said Beach was a recidivist who was appropriately punished for his horrific actions.

“Domestic violence has life-changing consequences, and the victims in this case are to be praised for their bravery for coming forward,” he said.
