Sentence In Fatal Box Cutter Stabbing
Andrew Goodenough pleaded guilty in February to fatally stabbing a man who was shopping for groceries on a Saturday.
NEW WINDSOR, NY — An Orange County man who stabbed and killed someone shopping at a supermarket received his sentence Monday.
Andrew Goodenough, 41, of New Windsor, was sentenced to 20 years to life in state prison, Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler announced.
On Feb. 2, Goodenough pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of Michael Kohus, 35, who was shopping in the New Windsor ShopRite June 11, 2016.

Police said Goodenough came up behind Kohus and stabbed him with a box cutter in the neck. He was taken to hospital where he later died.
Hoovler said that Goodenough, at the time he pleaded guilty, admitted he stabbed and killed Kohus.

Goodenough maintained that Kohus had threatened him in the past, but acknowledged that he was not being threatened or posed a threat to him at the time of the stabbing. However, police and prosecutors were never able to find any prior interaction between the two men.
Hoovler said Kohus lost his life in a random encounter with someone who killed him for no discernable reason.
"My deepest condolences go out to family and friends of the victim," he said, "who must live with the fact that their loved one was killed when doing nothing more provocative than simply grocery shopping on a Saturday.
Hoovler said Goodenough's actions were reprehensible and he knew at the time what he was doing was wrong.
"The community is far safer while he is in prison," he said.
