HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Travel plans may be snarled by wintry weather if you are headed north or west in the state for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Local weather, in contrast, will be much nicer, though windy, according to meteorologists.

Gov. Kathy Hochul urged state residents to be cautious, as lake effect snow is expected to impact western and central New York.

Some areas of the state are expected to get between a foot and 18 inches of snow, according to Hochul. Snowfall is forecasted to begin tonight and hit peak rates Thursday into Friday.

She urged residents to watch forecasts closely and plan their travel times accordingly.

“Thanksgiving is the busiest travel time of the year, and as lake effect snow enters our holiday plans, I am urging New Yorkers to exercise caution by leaving extra time for travel and monitoring for weather updates,” Hochul said.

The weather is expected to be much nicer locally. In the lower to mid-Hudson Valley region, there is a chance for showers overnight tonight, then Thanksgiving is expected to be sunny.

Abbey Gant, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service based in Albany, said the Hudson Valley will experience gusty winds Thursday and Friday.

Wind gusts on Thursday are expected to be in the 25 to 30 mile per hour range, followed by wind of up to 35 miles per hour on Friday, according to Gant.

The wind will gradually decrease as the weekend arrives, and both Saturday and early Sunday are expected to be dry. There’s a chance for rain showers later on Sunday and Sunday night in the Hudson Valley. In some areas, rain will mix with snow, according to Gant.

“We do have a chance for snow showers Monday night and into Tuesday,” Gant said.
