Snow Squalls Forecast For Hudson Valley: Here's When, As Major Weather Changes Begin

Frigid temperatures are expected after a front passes through today, according to meteorologists.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — An arctic front is expected to bring snow showers and possible snow squalls to the Northeast today, including in the Hudson Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

It predicts there is a 20 percent chance of snow squalls in much of the Hudson Valley region to the west of Connecticut, with the greatest risk in the northern sections. The risk for snow squalls jumps to around 60 percent in New York State to the west of Massachusetts.

Potentially affected interstate highways in the Northeast include I-90, I-81, I-87, and 1-89, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow squalls, or short bursts of heavy snow and gusty winds, can cause dangerous driving conditions due to sudden decreased visibility and slippery roadways.

The National Weather Service cautions residents to be alert for snow squall warnings, and if there is one, slow down or delay travel.

The front will finish moving through the region later this afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

After the front passes through, expect much colder temperatures. On Thursday night, low temperatures will dip into the single digits and teens in the Hudson Valley, and it will be windy, making it feel even colder, according to the National Weather Service.

It predicts the next chance for snow showers in the region will be Friday night into early Saturday.

Here are the forecast details for the Mid-Hudson Valley area via the National Weather Service:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 38. West wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 6. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 27. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph.

Friday Night: A slight chance of snow showers after 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 37. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 19.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 37.

Here are the forecast details for the lower Hudson Valley area via the National Weather Service:

Today: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 39. Wind chill values between 20 and 30. Breezy, with a northwest wind 14 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 16. Wind chill values between 5 and 10. Blustery, with a northwest wind 19 to 24 mph decreasing to 8 to 13 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph.

Friday: Increasing clouds, with a high near 31. Wind chill values between 5 and 15. North wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of light snow, mainly after 10 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25. Calm wind.

Saturday: A 20 percent chance of light snow before 10 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 39. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the afternoon.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 26.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 39.
