Social Media Threats Unfounded, Eldred School District Says

The first day of classes went on as scheduled, school officials said, with an increased law enforcement presence.

ELDRED, NY — The first day of classes for the 2023-24 school year in the Eldred Central School District went on as planned Tuesday in spite of threats posted on social media.

Traci Ferreira, Eldred’s superintendent of schools, said Monday that the reported threats were confirmed to be unfounded by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department and that the schools, students and staff are safe.

She said Tuesday morning that a search warrant was executed Tuesday and a person was taken into custody.

“We will still have an increased presence of law enforcement personnel today,” Ferreira said.

Schools were checked by law enforcement prior to students coming into them.

Counselors and school psychologists will be available throughout the day for students and staff members, according to school officials.
