HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Meteorologists are predicting a stormy Saturday in the Hudson Valley region, with the potential for powerful thunderstorms and even an isolated tornado.

Joe Villani, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service based in Albany, said there is an 80 to 90 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday.

Those thunderstorms “could be strong to severe, with strong gusty winds and possibly hail,” Villani said.

The New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services announced Friday that “damaging winds, large hail & an isolated tornado are all possible.”

Saturday will start out very warm and humid, with highs in the low to mid-80s in the Hudson Valley. The storm risk begins about mid-day Saturday and continues through much of the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

There could be lingering showers both Saturday evening and early on Sunday, according to Villani.

The rest of the day on Sunday will be mostly dry, cooler and less humid, with highs around 74 degrees.

The best times for outdoor weekend activities are today, early Saturday, and Sunday afternoon.

Looking ahead, Monday through Thursday are expected to be dry, cooler and less humid in the Hudson Valley, with daytime highs in the mid-70s and nighttime highs in the upper 40s to low 50s, according to Villani.

This Afternoon: Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. South wind 8 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 65. South wind 3 to 6 mph.

Saturday: A chance of showers before 11 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. High near 84. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 56. North wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday: A chance of showers, mainly before 8 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 74. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 48.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 73.

Saturday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 2 a.m., then a chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 59. Sunday: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before noon. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 74. North wind around 7 mph becoming west in the afternoon.
