Thunderstorms, Potential Flooding Predicted For Hudson Valley: What To Expect

The National Weather Service has a flood watch in effect Monday for the region.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — A flood watch is in place for this afternoon and evening, as forecasters predict scattered showers and thunderstorms with the potential for heavy rain.

Joe Villani, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service based in Albany, said the flood watch is in effect throughout southern New York, including the mid-Hudson Valley region.

“Showers and thunderstorms are developing this afternoon, and they are bringing potential downpours,” Villani said.

The storms won’t materialize everywhere, but locations that are impacted could see flooding, he said.

The greatest risk for storms is from now through this evening, with storm activity decreasing after 9 p.m., according to Villani.

The National Weather Service has a flood watch in place beginning at 2 p.m.

Excessive runoff could mean flooding of urban and poor drainage areas, and small rivers, creeks, and streams, according to the National Weather Service.

“Rainfall rates of 2+ inches per hour are possible with any repetitive thunderstorm activity,” the National Weather Service reports.

It anticipates widespread rainfall of up to 1.5 inches, with localized rainfall totals of up to three inches.

Much of this rainfall could happen within a three to four hour period, causing “isolated to scattered instances of flash flooding,” according to the National Weather Service.

Residents should monitor forecasts in case a flash flood warning is issued.
