Wet Weather, River Flooding In Forecast For Hudson Valley
Meteorologists say minor flooding is possible in the lower Hudson River due to Hurricane Erin.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Hurricane Erin is expected to cause minor flooding in the Hudson River as the storm works its way northward, according to meteorologists.
Michael Main, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albany, said the river will reach minor flood stage around midnight on both Thursday night and Friday night.
“That is from the hurricane out at sea pushing water into Long Island Sound and up the Hudson River,” Main said.

The hurricane’s impact will be stronger along the Atlantic coastline. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center is cautioning against swimming at most U.S. east coast beaches due to “life-threatening surf and rip currents.”
Residents who are vacationing at Atlantic coast beaches should check for any warnings and alerts. Gov. Kathy Hochul has directed state parks to suspend swimming on Long Island’s ocean beaches through Thursday, for example.

The hurricane is expected to be pushed out to sea without making landfall in the U.S.
A frontal system, which will push the hurricane away from land, will bring rain to the Hudson Valley region today and into Thursday. The National Weather Service indicates thunderstorms are possible today also.
The total rainfall from this system is expected to reach up to an inch in some Hudson Valley towns, according to Main.
“It has been very dry, and it will be beneficial for people’s lawns. which are brown and dried out,” Main said.
Temperatures are expected to remain cool, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s, through Thursday.
Sunshine and warmer temperatures return on Friday, when high temperatures will reach back up into the 80s, according to the National Weather Service.
