2018 Tony Award Nominations: 'SpongeBob,' 'Mean Girls' Lead

Other works to score double-digit nominations include: "Angels in America," "The Band's Visit" and "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child."

NEW YORK, NY — The 2018 Tony Awards nominations were announced Tuesday, and the leaders may surprise you. "Mean Girls" and "SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical" were the most-nominated works, each earning 12 nominations.

Other plays and musicals to earn double-digit nominations include: "The Band’s Visit" (11), "Angels in America" (11), "Carousel" (10), "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" (10) and "My Fair Lady" (10).

This year's acting award nominations included several movie and television starts such as Denzel Washington for "The Iceman Cometh," Michael Cera for "Lobby Hero," Amy Schumer for "Meteor Shower," Laurie Metcalf for "Three Tall Women" and Andrew Garfield for "Angels in America."

The Tony Awards are set to take place June 10 and will be hosted by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban. The awards ceremony will return to Radio City Music Hall and will be broadcast by CBS.
