Manhattan Building Evacuated Following Wall Collapse: FDNY

MIDTOWN EAST, NY — A 17-story office building on the border between Midtown and the Upper East Side was evacuated on Tuesday afternoon after a wall in the basement began to collapse, New York City Fire Department officials said.

According to the FDNY, they received a call about a basement wall collapsing on Tuesday at 12:22 p.m. at 130 East 59th Street, between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan.

People evacuated before the fire department's arrival, authorities said.

The fire department stabilized the collapsing wall by 1:10 p.m., the FDNY said.

There were no reported injuries, and it is not yet known how many people were evacuated, the FDNY said.

The NYC Department of Buildings has been assigned to investigate and remedy the issue.

According to the Department of Buildings, inspectors observed several cracks in the wall near the building's foundation at the cellar level and found a section of the wall partially collapsed.

Investigations at the scene are ongoing, a DOB spokesperson told Patch.
