Manhole Erupts In Flames In Front Of Carmine's, FDNY Says

Smoke and fire began shooting out of the ground in front of the famed Italian restaurant early Friday, FDNY said.

MIDTOWN, NY — An electrical fire sent smoke and flames shooting out of a Midtown manhole in front of famed Italian restaurant Carmine's Friday morning, FDNY said.

More than 60 firefighters from 12 units responded to the fire on W. 44th Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues at 7:26 a.m., a FDNY spokeswoman said.

Firefighters are still battling the flames. Con Edison is en route to the scene, FDNY said.
