Massive Midtown Migrant Shelter Is Closing: Mayor Adams

The Roosevelt Hotel's migrant shelter and aid center processed 75 percent of the city's migrant arrivals, Mayor Eric Adams said.

MIDTOWN, NY — Midtown's Roosevelt Hotel, which has operated as the site of the city's largest migrant shelter and intake center over the past three years, is beginning the process of shutting down, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said on Monday morning.

According to Adams, 232,000 migrants entered New York City in the past three years, and the Roosevelt Hotel's Asylum Arrival Center and Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center processed around 75 percent of all arrivals.

Now, just 350 migrants are arriving per week in New York City, down from 4,000 per week, Adams said.

In a video statement posted to his X (formerly Twitter) account, Adams said the closure of the Midtown shelter marks a turning point for the city.

“While we’re not done caring for those that came into our care, today marks another milestone in demonstrating the immense progress we have achieved in turning the corner on the unprecedented international humanitarian effort,” Adams said.

This announcement comes just days after the Trump Administration pulled $80 million in federal funding from New York City's bank accounts previously approved by the Biden administration, which was meant to fund migrant shelters across the city, according to the Associated Press.

Now, city lawyers are suing Donald Trump, the U.S. Treasury, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for taking the $80 million, City Comptroller Brad Lander said on Friday.

"The lawyers who are standing up to President Trump and Eric Adams’ collusion deserve praise and we look forward to Donald Trump returning the money he stole from New York," Lander said.

Deputy Mayor for Communications Fabien Levy told Patch there is no official last day for the Midtown shelter.
